Apple’s June 8 developer-tools announcement centers on making Xcode a place where coding agents do more than suggest snippets. In Xcode 27, Apple says conversations with agents support interactive planning, multiturn Q and A, and a canvas that can show Markdown, code changes and previews side by side.

The bigger shift is that Apple is giving those agents ways to check their own work. According to Apple, agents in Xcode 27 can write and run tests, try ideas in Playgrounds, review visual changes in previews, and interact with the simulator through the new Device Hub. That pushes the tooling closer to supervised automation than simple autocomplete.

Apple is also opening the environment to outside systems. Xcode 27 plug-ins can bring in tools through the Model Context Protocol and connect to agents that support the Agent Client Protocol, while GitHub and Figma are first in line for streamlined installation. Apple’s own framing is that Xcode should be the best place to build for Apple platforms and the best place to code with agents.

Alongside the AI push, Apple says Xcode 27 is now Apple-silicon-only, 30 percent smaller and faster to set up. Xcode Cloud is listed as up to 2x faster, with added support for Metal-based apps and visionOS builds. Developer betas are available now, while Apple notes that some related Apple Intelligence features remain limited to supported regions.

Apple is trying to keep AI coding inside its native toolchain instead of leaving developers to stitch together external assistants. The practical significance is less about model branding than workflow control: test execution, simulator access, standards-based agent hookups and faster cloud builds all make Xcode more central to how Apple-platform software gets built.
